European Voluntary Service


The Youth in Action programme offers young Europeans the chance to make a real difference to the world – and to their own lives – through the European Voluntary Service.

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides young Europeans with the unique chance to express their personal commitment through unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. In this way, it seeks to develop solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, thus contributing to reinforcing social cohesion in the European Union and to promoting young people's active citizenship.

 
What does this mysterious abbrreviation hide?
 
The EVS is an abbreviation of European Voluntary Service.

Why is it European , why is it voluntary and why is it service?

European-The European Community, European Parlaiment European Union memberstates created a common programme, called Youth 2000-2006 which gives the legal background for backing up the nonformal training programmes for the youth.
One of these subprogrammes is EVS, which is for young people aged 18-30.
Volunteer: youngsters by their own will participate in the program. Their services is free of any material interest.
Service: volunteer service activity is free for other peoples assets.
 
In EVS organizations and the volunteers  can participate in various activities: /poor financial background, senior people, and helping people on the periphery/ and cultural activities such as /protection of national munuments, organizing street festivals/ xenophobia, rassism, drug prevention programs, education and sport activities. Volunteers can be a part of the social and political changes.
They can learn how could they help and improve the social and civil sector. The 3 main characters /volunteer, host organization, and sending organization/ can participate local initiatives which can help intercultural and social learning process.
 
Why is it worth participating in the program?
 
...This is s new kind of learning and experience gaining for young voulunteers.
Participating in the program is gives them the opportunity to broaden their viewing angle adopting new cultural and social ambience and self-confidence growing. The program enables young people
mobilize their enhusiasm, creativity in order to participate in functional activities of helping other people , and they have a voice in the program as well. Thy learn how to take responsibilities and what it means to be part of a team. Besides that far away from their homes they learn how to improve their skills what is -without question-part of the turning into socially responsible adults.
 
Who can participate in the program?
 
Volunteer: In EVS program any youngsters have the right to participate in the program between the ages 18-30/citizens of the program countries/ The program is open for everybody, without any kind of school degree. Enhusiasm and motivation are the only important things for the young people to be able to spend 3-12 months in a new community and country and to contribute to local community s development.
The program aims those who -besides the normal study and work possibilities need something else.
Those who identify themselves with people living in other countries /who are less lucky than they are/
and would like to express themselves, or would like to learn new languages , or to perfect their already existing language knowledge for those who want to learn how to work in team, would like to improve their personalities or want to be more self confident by living and working in a different country.
